How to Set Business Goals for the New Year

Happy New Year everyone, we hope that you all enjoyed a well-deserved rest over the Christmas period. At Aim for the Sky, we believe that New Year is the perfect time to step back, reflect on what you’ve achieved and set goals for the coming year. But while many individuals are setting goals, not all businesses are doing the same thing.

Goal setting is a great process for businesses to go through, it focuses your attention on your ideal future, and can motivate your team to turn your vision into a reality. So with that in mind, it's a time to implement the changes you’ve been meaning to make, dust off your business plans and set strategic targets.

Reflect and Review: Before you jump ahead and start planning for the New Year, why not reflect on what your business achieved last year. Take the time to thank those people who made it all possible and who helped ensure that the last year was such a success. You should consider those things that went well and those things that didn’t. No-one’s perfect and every mistake in business is a learning experience. So this year make sure that you benefit from lessons learnt and expand on the positives!

Choose the Right Goals: Setting goals requires you to make decisions about what you want to achieve. A great way to create a list of goals for the New Year is to call a board or team meeting to discuss your business plan and to identify areas for improvement. Often people and businesses don't accomplish their resolutions because most of the goals we set for ourselves are too ambitious. It is therefore important that your goals are achievable and measurable.

Create a Plan of Action: Once you’ve set your goals you need to decide how you will achieve them. This is the planning stage of goal setting. Create a framework for a successful and prosperous New Year by setting a realistic plan of action with measurable goals with corresponding time frames. Many have predicted that this will be a year of growth and success for any business that takes time to strategize and implement carefully laid plans.

Remain Flexible: While it’s important to create a plan of action, it’s equally important to adapt to changing circumstances and to take advantage of opportunities as and when they arise. To do this you will need to be flexible and adapt and amend your goals and targets as and when required. A great way to do this is to regularly review your goals to ensure they remain relevant.

Focus on your people: We say it a lot but your employees are the backbone of your business. Take the time to communicate with them and set individual and team goals as well as whole business goals. By getting to know your teams and by encouraging your people to develop their key skills you can improve performance within your business. They are also a great source of inspiring fresh ideas and suggestions for improvement.
